Escape to Paradise: Jacksonville's Best-Kept Secret…Maybe Not Anymore? (A Real Review, Folks!)
Okay, so "Escape to Paradise"? That's a bold claim, even for someone who's seen their fair share of hotel hype. But after spending a few days at this Jacksonville gem (allegedly a "secret," though the cat's kinda outta the bag now, judging by the bookings…), I'm ready to spill the beans – and maybe, just maybe, book another trip myself. Let's dive in, shall we? Because honestly, after all the fluff, what matters is the real experience.

First Impressions (and the Slight Panic of Accessibility)
Finding the place was a breeze, thanks to the trusty GPS (thank God for that!). I'm always a little on edge about accessibility. I’m not in a wheelchair, but I have some mobility issues, and I'm always looking for smooth sailing. "Escape to Paradise" promises it, and thankfully, mostly delivers. The wheelchair accessibility is definitely there, with ramps (good, sturdy ones, not those flimsy things), and a working elevator. The lobby is open and inviting, which is a huge plus. The front desk staff were super friendly, though, and one of them practically sprinted to help me with my luggage, which I appreciated.
The Room: My Little Sanctuary (Minus the Minor Crisis)
My room? Oh man, the room was… lovely. I’m not usually one for gushing, but the air conditioning was a godsend, which is saying a lot for Florida summer. The bed was huge, with a ridiculously soft mattress (definitely an extra-long bed, I think I could have gotten lost in it!). They even had blackout curtains - a total game-changer for a light sleeper like myself. I was also pleased to see a desk so that I could do some work in the room, and the complimentary tea was a nice touch, although I'm more of a coffee person.
But here's where things got a little… chaotic. Remember that internet access – wireless I thought I was getting? Well, let’s just say the Wi-Fi was a total drama queen. Dropping, buffering, refusing to connect… It was a constant battle. Thankfully, my phone's hotspot saved the day (phew!). And while they boast Free Wi-Fi in all rooms!, let's say it’s more like "Free Spotty Wi-Fi in all rooms." The whole thing made my initial thoughts of the internet access – LAN look like a distant, unattainable dream.
One more thing about the room: the bathtub was a dream, seriously! I mean, I’m talking deep enough to actually soak in, not just… sit in a glorified puddle. They even had bathrobes and slippers, which made me feel like a movie star. Now, I could definitely get used to this lifestyle!
The Spa: My Version of Nirvana (and Near-Death by Cucumber)
Alright, the spa. This is where "Escape to Paradise" really shines. They’ve got the whole shebang: Sauna, Steamroom, Spa, Massage, Body scrub, Body wrap, Foot bath. I went for a Swedish massage, and man, it was heavenly. I almost fell asleep and I think my masseuse could feel my soul melting away.
Post-massage, I ventured into the "relaxation zone" – a chill-out space with plush loungers, soft music, and a bowl of…cucumbers. (I opted for a water instead, the cucumbers felt a bit aggressive). The pool area, a spectacular Pool with view, was incredible, though I had the same problem as in the room - the Wi-Fi in public areas was dodgy. They really need to sort this out.
Food, Glorious Food (and the Occasional Menu Mishap)
Listen, I love to eat. Like, really love to eat. And the dining options here were pretty darn good. I was a big fan of the Asian breakfast, and the Coffee/tea in restaurant was a morning must. They also had a Vegetarian restaurant, which was great for my friend, who is a veggie. I took advantage of the Room service [24-hour] service more than once. They’ve got a Poolside bar for those who like to sip cocktails while taking in the view.
However, there were a few hiccups. One night, I tried the A la carte in restaurant and ordered what was described as a "Chef's Special Salad." What arrived was… less than special. It was a pile of lettuce, some limp vegetables, and a dressing that tasted suspiciously like dish soap. The server was lovely and immediately apologized, but it was a slight disappointment. But let’s be real, this sort of thing is pretty normal for restaurants, right? Imperfection is human, you know?
I should also mention that they do a great job of providing Sanitized kitchen and tableware items, and I felt very safe in terms of Safe dining setup, including plenty of Physical distancing of at least 1 meter and Staff trained in safety protocol.
Things to Do & Ways to Relax (And How I Almost Became a Fitness Influencer)
Beyond the spa, there's plenty to keep you occupied. There's a Fitness center, which I bravely attempted to use. Let me just say, the treadmill looked… intimidating. I did a little bit of running, but I'm not a natural gym-goer. Thankfully, they have Poolside bar for those who want to relax with a drink immediately afterwards.
They also offer a range of activities, but those seemed to shift slightly.
Cleanliness & Safety: They're on Top of It (Mostly)
This is a big one, especially in these times. The hotel takes cleanliness seriously. The rooms are sanitized between stays, and there's hand sanitizer everywhere. They also have Anti-viral cleaning products and Daily disinfection in common areas, and let's not forget the Staff trained in safety protocol. The smoke alarms are very loud, and there are fire extinguisher throughout. They even offer the option to have Room sanitization opt-out available. This gave me some peace of mind. However, I did notice a few areas (like the elevators) where things that were visibly clean were not as easy to clean as they might have been.
Services & Conveniences: A Mixed Bag (But Mostly Good!)
The concierge was incredibly helpful, booking me a taxi and giving me fantastic local recommendations. They also have Laundry service and Dry cleaning, which came in handy. They offer Cashless payment service, so I was able to settle my bill using nothing but my phone, and there's plenty of room with Car park [free of charge]
However, the convenience store was really limited, and I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more on offer. The gift/souvenir shop could also have been better as it seemed to have been abandoned decades ago.
For the Kids & the Folks Who Need a Little Help
There’s a Babysitting service, which didn’t apply to me, but it's a nice touch. They were very accommodating with Facilities for disabled guests and, as I mentioned earlier, their elevator and wheelchair accessibility were well managed.
The Verdict: Paradise (with a Few Quirks)
So, is "Escape to Paradise" a true "Escape to Paradise?" Honestly? Close. REALLY close. It's got a lot going for it: stunning location, top-notch spa, comfortable rooms, and generally friendly service. The accessibility is a major plus for those who need it. The food is great, overall. But… the Wi-Fi drama, the slightly bland salad, and the occasional dated interior (some parts could use a refresh) do prevent it from achieving perfection.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars. (Or maybe 4.5 if they finally fix that Wi-Fi!)
Would I return? Absolutely. Am I already starting to plan my next visit? Maybe… just maybe… 😉

Alright, buckle up buttercups, because we're about to dive headfirst into a glorious, messy, and entirely subjective itinerary for a stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott Jacksonville South/Bartram Park in Jacksonville, Florida. Consider this less a plan, and more a… well, a controlled freak-out session in itinerary form.
Day 1: Arrival and Existential Dread (and Pool Time!)
- 1:00 PM: Land at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). Ugh. Airports. Always the same soul-crushing, sterile environment. Delayed flight? Check. Someone inevitably walking way too slowly in front of me? Check. But hey, at least the air conditioning is blasting… I'm already sweating, even though I'm pretty sure my internal climate never adjusts. Grab the rental car. Pray to the GPS gods it gets me there. Side note: I swear one time my rental car GPS told me to drive directly into a lake. I still have trust issues.
- 2:00 PM: Check into the Residence Inn. First impressions matter, right? Hoping for a smooth check-in. Praying to the hotel gods for a room that doesn't smell faintly of chlorine and despair. Okay, it's a suite. Score! That little kitchenette thing is a lifesaver. Got that mini-fridge locked and loaded with provisions (see: questionable snacks in bulk).
- 2:30 PM: The dreaded unpacking. Why do I always pack so much stuff? Like, realistically, I need maybe half of it. I overpack like it's my job. Maybe it's a form of security blanket.
- 3:00 PM: POOL TIME! My favorite part of any vacay. Or at least it should be. But first, the internal debate: sunblock or not sunblock? I burn like a vampire in daylight but also hate the feeling of sunscreen. The battle is real. Okay, slathered up. Hit the pool. Immediately realize I forgot my sunglasses. And my book. And my hat! Ugh. It is hot. So hot. But the pool is glorious! Seriously considering just living here. This is where it all goes downhill. Someone will most definitely splash me. I get so mad.
- 4:00 PM: Post-pool existential crisis. The water's cool, its nice. But I still hate the feeling of wet hair and sunscreen.
- 7:00 PM: Dinner. Okay, the hotel breakfast buffet is tempting but also slightly terrifying. The potential for questionable scrambled eggs, the plastic-wrapped fruit from the last Ice Age… Nah, I’m going rogue tonight. Gonna order something on DoorDash. Pizza or something. Probably pizza. Or takeout Thai food. My emotions take over, so I definitely miss my food at the door.
Day 2: Parks, Parking, and Peak Disappointment
- 8:00 AM: Breakfast. Okay, I decided to be brave. Hotel breakfast it is! I'm trying to be healthy (ish). The fruit is surprisingly edible. Maybe it's a fluke. The scrambled eggs, however, are a culinary crime. Texture of rubber. Taste of sadness. I stick to the coffee and the pastries. No regrets.
- 9:00 AM: Destination: Adventure Landing. This is either gonna be a triumph of childish joy or a complete and utter disaster. Mini-golf, go-karts, arcades… perfect for a laugh, or a total meltdown. (Spoiler: A little bit of both!)
- 9:30 AM: Arrive and park. Wait, where can I park? Where is the actual entrance? I have a total breakdown and can't figure out where to park.
- 10:00 AM-12:00 PM: Mini golf. I’ll be honest, I’m terrible. Utterly, spectacularly terrible. But the course is surprisingly decent, even if the giant plastic dinosaur is judging me with its soulless, molded eyes. My score is atrocious. One of the carts is out of service.
- 12:30 PM: Post-Adventure Landing food coma. Too much heat, too much excitement, and I need a solid nap. I also overspent, which is a bummer. I get back to my room and it appears that the cleaning service was skipped. Ugh.
- 2:00 PM: Nap Time. The bed is actually pretty comfy, so the nap is an absolute necessity.
- 4:00 PM: I head back to the pool. A much more peaceful experience this time around. I actually finish that book I brought with me.
Day 3: Goodbye, Jacksonville (and lingering existential questions)
- 9:00 AM: Hotel breakfast (again). This time I skip the eggs entirely. Learning. Growth. Maybe.
- 10:00 AM: Pack. Ugh. Packing. The most tedious task. Stuff it back in. Realize I’ve bought approximately three times the amount of souvenirs I actually need (and will probably never use).
- 11:00 AM: One last lingering around the suite. I sit on the couch and just look out the window. Feeling kind of mellow.
- 12:00 PM: Check out. Hopefully, the check-out process is easy. Pray for no surprise charges. Successfully avoid a meltdown.
- 1:00 PM: Head to airport…again. The cycle begins anew. I already miss the pool. I look around at all the other people. What are their lives? Why is travel is such a mixed bag of joy and frustration? What is the meaning of life?
- 3:00 PM: Flight. More delays? Probably. But hey, at least I have that book. And I'm ready to return to the real world. Sort of.
- 6:00 PM: Arrive back home, a little sunburned, a little weary, a little… happy? Okay, a lot happy. Even with the imperfections and the meltdowns, there’s something about the memories, good and bad, that makes it all worth it. I’ll probably book another trip soon. And then I'll probably swear I'll never leave my house again after that. You know, the usual.
